The purpose of
the organization is to develop and foster a network of citizens and institutions in Maine
who identify, collect interpret, and/or provide access to materials relating to history
and culture.
We seek to
pursue this purpose by educating ourselves and the public through activities such as:
Fostering identification, preservation, and use of records and objects of enduring value
in Maine, both public and private, corporate and individual; Improving the management and
the public awareness and understanding of such records and objects; Sponsoring continuing
education; Providing a forum for the exchange of information among individuals and
institutions; Fostering communication and cooperation with other organizations (local,
regional, and national) and with individuals and groups representing allied disciplines
and; Promoting Maine museums and archives to the public.

Information on
funding opportunities; workshops; books and publications; statewide archival, museum and
historical society activities; shared resources: from free display cases to interns;
all-volunteer organizations; ideas that work in Maine; computers; conservation; technical
questions; ethical matters. Contribute articles to the Newsletter. Download

Special Rates are
available to members for group listings, professional services and supplies.

The Annual
Conference offers opportunities to gather with others who share your interest in Maine
history and culture to share ideas, network, and review and acquire the skills to manage
our states cultural resources. Topics may include: collection care, membership and
development, disaster planning, exhibit design and building on a budget, educational
programming, local history writing and research, registration methods, legislation that
affects museums, recruiting and retaining volunteers, board development, grant writing,
preservation planning, museum shop management, accessibility issues, care for archives and
artifact collections, and much more!

Conference
topics listed above are also available as local and regional workshops to make attendance
easier and to tailor needs to local issues and organizations.

The core
curriculum program helps to assure that a variety of workshops are offered and includes an
optional certificate program to help those working in collecting organizations throughout
Maine to learn basic skills and to help them to respond to current issues at their site.

MAM has a Board of Directors and officers elected by
the membership at its Annual Conference. Membership is open to all who share our
interests.
