TEACHING AND INTERPRETING THE CIVIL WAR

| ARE YOU READY FOR THE SESQUICENTENNIAL?
Are you an elementary or middle school teacher hoping to enrich your Civil War curriculum as we approach the Sesquicentennial Commemoration (2011-2016)? Are you a museum educator or docent looking to improve your interpretive skills? Are you interested in learning about how the Civil War is a Maine story? Then consider this workshop, designed for both teachers and heritage resource volunteers and professionals. Funded in part by the Maine Humanities Council.
This Maine Archives and Museums Workshop is organized by the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum and the Maine Historical Society and will take place at the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum, Peaks Island, on Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 8:30 a.m.* to 3:30 p.m. Fee: $15 per person.

Brian Collins, Executive Director, Pejepscot Historical Society: "Restoration as a Tool for Education"
Jamie Kingman-Rice, Public Services Librarian, Maine Historical Society: "Civil War Resources at the Maine Historical Society"
Kim MacIsaac, Executive Director, Fifth Maine Regiment Museum: "Remembering the Civil War in a Throw-Away Society"
Patricia Erikson, Adjunct Professor of American and New England Studies and Consultant for Fifth Maine Regiment Museum: "Hands-On and Minds-On: Using Primary Sources to Teach the Civil War"
Caitlin LeClair, King Middle School: "Expedition into the Past: The Civil War as Context for Teaching Civil Rights"

Salary contact hours will be offered to those teachers interested. Participants can bring bag lunches or pre-order and pre-pay for sandwiches catered by the Peaks Café.
*requires taking a 7:45 a.m. Casco Bay Lines ferry boat to Peaks Island and walking a pleasant one-quarter of a mile to the museum. A 3:45 ferry would offer a return trip. |

Collections Care Workshop

| The L. C. Bates Museum in Hinckley will present a collections care workshop on Monday, June 21. The workshop, led by object conservator Ronald S. Harvey, will explore how value assessments may provide the participants a greater knowledge base for communicating quantifiable collection values and collection care needs to their administration, audience, funders, and the general public. It will also deal with some specific treatment methods and assessments for objects based on their value to the museum mission and collection care needs. It will also look at ways to care for and/or store specific types of collections. This workshop was made possible through a Conservation Project Support Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Please contact the L. C.
