In 1862 Joshua L. Chamberlain took a leave of absence from his teaching duties at Bowdoin College and received a commission as Lt. Col. in the 20th Maine Infantry. Despite having no prior military experience, he became one of Maine's greatest Civil War heroes. His unusual tactics at Gettysburg helped to win that battle for the Union and earned him a Congressional Medal of Honor. By order of General Ulysses S. Grant, Chamberlain accepted the formal surrender of Confederate troops at Appomattox.

Chamberlain and his wife Fannie purchased their Brunswick home in 1867 during his first term as governor of Maine. A few years later he enlarged it, adding a second floor. In 1983 the Pejepscot Historical Society purchased the home and began the long process of restoration. Today 7 rooms of the house chronicle Chamberlain's military, political, and academic careers.
