The Fifth Maine Regiment Memorial Hall, a 21/2 story Queen Anne style cottage, was built in 1888 as a reunion hall and summer home for the veterans of the Fifth Regiment Maine Volunteer Infantry. For nearly 60 years the veterans and their families enjoyed cooling breezes and stunning views of Whitehead Passage and the Atlantic Ocean from the verandah of their beloved cottage. Today the Hall, a National Register property, is maintained as a Civil War museum by a community association. The Fifth Maine's reenactor unit considers the Hall its "headquarters." Activities include Civil War encampments, lecture series, school programs, public meals, and many cultural events.
