Fort Knox State Historic Site
Prospect

Prospect (across the Penobscot River from Bucksport)

During the American Revolution and the War of 1812, the British navy controlled the Penobscot River and Maine lands to the east. Fort Knox was built during the mid-nineteenth century to thwart a third British invasion that never came and to protect Bangor, the prosperous center of Maine's growing lumber empire. Construction on Fort Knox began in 1844 and continued sporadically until 1869 when work ended on the still unfinished fort.

Fort Knox was occupied by the military on only two occasions. Between 19 and 47 soldiers manned the fort for two years during the Civil War. About 500 soldiers were stationed there briefly during the Spanish-American War in 1898. No enemy activity occured at either time. Today Fort Knox remains a fine example of military construction of the mid-nineteenth century. It is a state historic site maintained by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands.
