The Washburn family of Livermore, like most Maine families, contributed a great deal to the war effort. Four of the seven Washburn brothers were actively involved in political and military matters. While serving as Maine's governor from 1861-1863, Israel, Jr. directed the recruitment of the state's volunteer regiments. Elihu, a congressman from Illinois, became chairman of the House Appropriations Committee during the Civil War and a valued advisor to Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Cadwallader resigned his seat in Congress to command the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry, while younger brother Samuel served in the navy. Norlands, the Washburn family estate, showcases the life and time of this well-known Maine family, with special emphasis on the military and political careers of four of the Washburn brothers.
