Basic Digitization

If you are new to digitization, planning a project that will involve digitizing your holdings, thinking about how to provide greater access to your materials, planning for Maine’s Bicentennial, or just curious about scanning, this half-day workshop will introduce you to basic digitization procedures and best practices.

Attendees will learn about the basics of scanning and digital project management; strategies for storing and managing digital files; scanning hardware and software; resources available online and in-state; and gain hands-on experience digitizing photos and textual materials.

Note: this workshop will not cover digitizing audio or moving images.

Tea and coffee are provided.

Schedule

9:00AM – 9:30AM: Coffee, tea, and introductions

9:30AM - 12:00PM: Workshop

The Venue

The Maine State Library shares a building at 230 State Street in Augusta with the Maine State Museum and Maine State Archives next to the capitol building. Click here for narrative directions.

Free parking is available on site and in the multilevel parking garage on the corner of Capitol and Sewall Streets. There are several additional smaller lots northeast of the parking garage, near the Blaine House, on Wade and Grove Streets. If parking in the lot on site, please observe the signs that outline restrictions. Parking can be tight when the legislature is in session, which it will be on June 5, so do budget time to find parking and walk back to the library.

Online registration will be open through June 3.  To register after this date, contact Erin Rhodes at 207-859-5152 or enrhodes@colby.edu.

The size of the workshop space limits registration to 35 participants - register early to reserve your space!
