As part of its continuing service to the field, Maine Archives and Museums' "News & Opportunities for the Field" allows members and non-members to post notices of their announcements, job and internship openings, workshops, and other news of interest to the field.     Internship in Museum Education or Museum Studies  A summer intern with background in education or museum studies is needed. This person will be trained to conduct public programming for children and adults. Programs for children will include arts and crafts projects, reading, outdoor and indoor games, and special campus tours. Other activities will include demonstrations of "Yard in the Yard" (a working scale model of a square rigger mast, sail and capstan that involves active participation from visitors) and hands-on public presentations of marine life using the museum's Touch Tank. Programs will be scheduled weekly for public drop-in participation. The intern will need good ability to work with children and adults; energy for outdoor demonstrations; and willingness to learn programs. Creative input is encouraged and welcome! This unpaid position runs for eight weeks, 24 hrs/wk, from mid-June through mid-August.     Penobscot Marine Museum is seeking a Finance and Operations Manager, responsible for the fiscal management of the organization (including budgeting, forecasting, monitoring and reporting) as well as administrative and financial functions critical to daily operations. S/he will work with work the Executive Director to provide staff support to the Board of Trustees and act as staff liaison to relevant board committees. In addition, s/he will assume responsibility for human resource functions including payroll and benefits administration, and oversight of the museum’s business insurance policies, and will work with development and program staff on grant applications and reporting. The candidate should demonstrate progressively responsible work experience in financial administration, including experience with fund accounting and audit preparation, and proficiency with computerized accounting software. A Bachelors Degree (MBA desirable) or equivalent years of directly-related experience resulting in a comprehensive knowledge of the field is required.     Through funding from the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH), BACC is pleased to offer a limited number of subsidized hazard surveys for $350. Applications are due May 31, 2012. A hazard survey is the first step in developing an Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan that is tailored to an institution's specific needs and circumstances.     Museum Educators conduct hands-on workshops in period costume for school groups, youth groups, and bus groups Late March through June and Late September through December.     Historic New England, the country's oldest and largest regional heritage organization, seeks an intern to work on a collections management project for the Sayward-Wheeler House in York Harbor, Maine. This internship is a great opportunity for a student interested in collections management to gain hands-on experience. Using existing object information cards and online catalog records, the intern will create object reference binders for rooms in the Sayward-Wheeler House. This project will entail photocopying existing object cards, checking records for accuracy of information and location and, if time allows, conducting research to fill in informational gaps and taking digital images of objects. Graduate or undergraduate students in museum studies, American studies or art history are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be detail-oriented, self-directed, and able to work independently after initial training. They must be able to direct volunteers who may assist with the project. Microsoft Office skills are required. The intern will work primarily at the Sarah Orne Jewett House in South Berwick with site visits to the Sayward-Wheeler House in York Harbor and the organization's collections facility in Haverhill, Massachusetts. A minimum commitment of 8 hours per week is required. The project may be expanded based on the intern's interest and abilities and may be offered again or expanded into the summer.     Three applicants will be selected for this year's Elizabeth Perkins Fellowship program. These three students will assume the responsibility of redeveloping and beginning to install an interpretive exhibit on the second floor of the 18th century John Hancock Warehouse. That space currently houses a 30-year-old exhibit. The 2012 exhibit will focus on the working waterfront throughout York's history. This project will provide considerable hands-on experience in exhibit design and installation both independently and in collaboration with the Old York staff. The exhibit process will begin with developing an exhibition plan and time line. An outline of exhibit resources including potential objects and a budget will be provided by the museum to help guide the exhibition process. Once a plan is complete, the Fellows will begin researching, choosing artifacts, creating labels and installing the exhibition. The goal is to have a full exhibition plan in place by the first week of August and possibly some of the installation begun. At the annual Fellows' Symposium on August 13th 2012 the summer's project will be unveiled to the public.     Historic New England seeks a seasonal part-time Guide to work at the Sarah Orne Jewett and Hamilton Houses in South Berwick, Maine for the 2012 season. Guide will conduct tours and assist with daily museum operations including tour admissions, museum shop sales, special programs, membership sales, and opening and closing the museum. Training is provided. Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent education. A Bachelor's degree is preferred. Applicant should enjoy working with the public, have an interest in history and have basic computer skills. Experience in retail sales and customer service desirable. Applicant be available one to two days per week June through mid-October with additional hours for training and special programs.     The Bangor Museum and History Center seeks a dynamic individual with strong presentation skills, a commitment to informal education and experience leading experiential-learning programs for families and school groups. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Educator is responsible for leading a variety of tours and programs in the areas of history and cultural education. As an integral member of the BMHC staff, the Museum Educator will work on the museum floor, off-site and in outreach programs to ensure that all guests, families, and schools have an excellent museum experience. This position will develop and implement new tours, curriculum, and activities in concert with the annual exhibit as well as lead tours and programs both in and out-of-doors, and be familiar with Maine State Learning Standards. This position works 25 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday. Requirements are: A Bachelor's Degree in History or Education (Master's preferred), self-motivated individual with an upbeat attitude, occasional holiday and evening work, must be able to tolerate exposure to outdoor elements and stand for long periods of time, ability to hike over paved and unpaved areas. Background and fingerprint checks are required, must have reliable transportation, and a valid Maine Driver's license. This is a part-time, non-exempt position for 1 year. No benefits. Position based on availability of funding.
