As part of its continuing service to the field, Maine Archives and Museums allows members and non-members to post notices of their announcements, job and internship openings, workshops, and other news of interest to the field. MAM approves all postings and reserves the right to edit or reject postings as it deems appropriate. This service is free to members; non-members will be charged $20 (Individual Membership is only $35).

    The Dyer Library and Saco Museum seek a Fellow to assist with the exhibition and presentation of the Moving Panorama of Pilgrim's Progress from June through November of 2012. This is a temporary, part-time position with a salary of $7,260 for 22 weeks. The Panorama Fellow will assist with the installation and deinstallation of the panorama in two discrete exhibition locations, will provide a security presence in the Pepperell Mill (Biddeford) location for approximately 30 hours per week throughout the run of the exhibition, will provide formal and informal tours of the exhibit, and will assist with planning and staffing panorama-related programs and events. This position reports to the Museum Director and will also take direction from the Education and Program Manager for the purposes of related programming. This position is an excellent pre-professional opportunity; preference will be given to degree candidates or recent recipients in art history, history, museum studies, or other related fields.     The Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont seeks an Executive Director.  As the largest art and heritage repository in southern Vermont, the Museum currently houses diverse collections reflecting the history of early Vermont and historically associated areas of New York and Massachusetts. As a leading cultural institution in the region, with a distinctive and distinguished heritage, the Museum expands the region’s awareness of its past as it nurtures minds and imaginations, young and old. It offers energetic, imaginative educational programs eagerly utilized by schools in the tri-state area of New York, Massachusetts and Vermont.

    Art and artifacts range in date from the early 18th century to the present. Holdings include the largest public collection of paintings by the great American folk artist Grandma Moses, which draws thousands of visitors annually from around the world. The Museum also maintains a Research Library with a substantial nucleus of New England historical and genealogical materials, including over 8,000 books, documents and primary sources.

    The position of Executive Director requires an experienced museum professional on whom the Board can rely to be knowledgeable regarding fund-raising, education, curatorial, public relations, and exhibit presentation as dictated by the mission of the museum.

    The Executive Director oversees the areas of Development, Curation/Collections, Programs, Public Relations, Finance, Museum Shop, Building and Grounds Management, Security, Librarian/Editor, and Volunteers. The effectiveness of the Executive Director in managing the position will be judged over time by:

    · success in sustaining the institution, and its popularity as reflected in public use and financial support;

    · the quality and frequency of its exhibits and the reputation of its collections; and

    · success in defining and articulating the means by which the Museum utilizes its resources to be of maximum public service.

     The current grant form for Basic Projects gives a deadline of March 1, 2012. The Historical Records Grants program has received further funding, so there will continue to be rolling deadlines for projects of up to $1000, although there might be a gap of a month or two. It is expected that there will be a Major Projects deadline of Oct. 1, 2012. New grant forms will be available by the end of February. Click the link here for more info and forms.

    NEMA Announces Member Benefit Programs
     

    After more than a year of planning and development, NEMA is launching a number of new benefits for its members.

    Discounted Guaranteed Life Insurance  All NEMA members (individual, institutional, institutional affiliates, and corporate) will now have access to guaranteed life insurance for themsleves, their employees, and their trustees starting at the discounted rate of $6.18 per month. No physical is required and no pre-existing conditions disqualify enrollment. Coverage is through Unum Life Insurance Company of Portland, Maine.

    Short and Long-term Disability Insurance Unum is also offering NEMA members access to long-term disability insurance, which would provide up to $6,000 per month to age 65. Short-term disability programs are also available providing up to 60% of an individual's salary for up to 26 weeks.

    Vision/Dental Insurance
     NEMA members can choose

     from several

     discounted eye care plans through Vision Choice

    Plan (VSP) starting at $6.54 per month. Dental insurance is available through Reliance Standard; rates vary based on where members reside. Individual and family plans are available for both programs.

    The Maine State Museum in Augusta is seeking a part-time (58 hours

    bi-weekly) Museum Specialist I to work as a collections manager.  This is professional services work in the museum's registration office, managing all aspects of collections care, handling, and processing, as well as assisting with storage, imaging, conservation, and recording keeping.  Tasks include: processing acquisitions, including numbering, measuring, and creation of digital images for exhibit preparation and identification purposes; coordination of object movement; help with packing and shipping objects; photography of objects when necessary; conducting of inventories; preparation of condition reports.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include independent judgment and sound decision making; familiarity with a variety of standard office equipment, including personal computers; knowledge of collections databases; understanding of research methodologies for anthropology, history, and natural history; knowledge of photography; knowledge of care and maintenance of museum collections. Minimum qualifications are four years experience and/or education in area of specialization; preference will be given to those applicants with a Bachelors degree in history, science, archaeology, museum studies, or related field with three years related experience or acceptable equivalent; knowledge of museum registration and collection management standards and methods as well as cataloguing, conservation, and collections storage practices.

    2012 Summer Fellowships

    Maine Preservation has opened the call for applications for the 2012 Summer Fellowships Program. Fellowships span nine weeks in the summer, with four weeks at Maine Preservation's headquarters, The Captain Reuben Merrill House, and five weeks placed in the field with a preservation trades firm.     The General Henry Knox Museum, an historic house museum in beautiful midcoast Maine, is pleased to post two paid internships for the summer of 2012.  The museum, a recreation of the 1794 mansion built by the country's first Secretary of War, houses an important collection of Federal Period furniture and decorative arts, as well as primary and secondary resources related to the economic development and settling of midcoast Maine.  The museum has a permanent staff of 3.5 FT employees and over fifty active volunteers, and offers a very active range of programs, classes and events during the summer.  For more information, see www.knoxmuseum.org <http://www.knoxmuseum.org/> . 

     

    Curatorial Intern:  This internship is designed to offer a broad range of experience in museum operations, including collections management, interpretation, research, and program and exhibition development.  Specific projects related to the Museum's collections will be developed in consultation with the Museum's staff, and special interests of the intern will be taken into account.  The intern will be trained to give tours and assist in other Museum operations as needed.  The Curatorial Intern will work 5 days a week (30 hours) for 20 weeks, and will be paid a stipend of

    $6,600.   

     

    Marketing Intern: This internship is also designed to offer a broad range of experience in museum operations, including program and exhibition development, interpretation, research, and public relations.  Specific projects related to the Museum's marketing initiatives will be developed in consultation with the Museum's staff and the Museum's marketing committee.

    The intern will be trained to give tours and assist in other Museum operations as needed.  The Marketing Intern will work 5 days a week (30

    hours) for 11 weeks, and will be paid a stipend of $2,900.  

     

    For both internships, undergraduate or graduate students with a background or strong interest in history, historic preservation, education, marketing, library and archival science or museum studies are encouraged to apply.  A high level of self-motivation and initiative is required.  Saturdays and some special evening and weekend events are required.  Starting and ending dates are flexible.  We regret that the museum can not provide housing.
