Position Title: Boat Plans Processing Assistant (Temporary)

Overview

Maine Maritime Museum is an independent, nonprofit institution dedicated to connecting people to the past, present, and future of Maine’s waterways and their global reach. Since this history includes different backgrounds, perspectives, and voices—and because our museum welcomes visitors from around the world—our institution is firmly committed to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. If you believe museums play a vital role revealing the past, informing the present, and shaping the future, we invite you to join our team. You will join us on the beautiful banks of the Kennebec River, on a twenty-acre campus where collaboration and creativity are encouraged.

Position Summary

The Processing Assistant will enhance access to primary source materials in the Nathan R. Lipfert Research Library. The primary role of the position is to sort, identify, and inventory a plans collection representing Maine-built working and pleasure craft, making information about the collection accessible via the museum's online collections management system. Related photographs and archival materials are also within the scope of the project.

The collection features the work of the Day family who were active designers and builders on the Blue Hill Peninsula for three-generations. With many of their designs still afloat today, these materials have both historical and contemporary significance, providing insight into the evolution of Downeast boat design and promoting an appreciation for classic motor vessels.

Reporting to the Curator of Collections, the Processing Assistant will gain experience with all aspects of archival processing while working closely with other staff and volunteers as needed.

Specific Duties

  • Perform physical processing tasks such as light cleaning, labeling, reorganizing, and rehousing materials using approved methods and materials.
  • Identify and inventory collection contents using established document formatting and terminology.
  • Digitize and catalog select materials.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of boat types and naval architecture.
  • Experience using word-processing software and spreadsheets.
  • Excellent written and organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or in close collaboration within a team.
  • Desire and openness to learn new skills and methodologies.
  • Previous experience in museum archives environment a plus.
