Museum Custodian - Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, Bethel

Position Summary

The Museum Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, and safety of the museum galleries, exhibits, and public spaces, as well as the museum's administrative offices. This position helps ensure that visitors, staff, volunteers, and board members experience a clean, professional, and welcoming environment. The position includes routine custodial duties, weekly deep cleaning, and the specialized cleaning of museum exhibits, display cases, and glass using museum-approved tools and techniques. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and takes pride in maintaining a world-class museum facility. This position reports to the Facilities Manager.

Essential Responsibilities

Museum & Office Cleaning

  • Clean and maintain all museum galleries, exhibit spaces, public areas, and administrative offices.

  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, and sanitize floors and surfaces throughout the museum and office spaces.

  • Clean conference rooms, reception areas, workstations, offices, classrooms, hallways, stairways, and common areas.

  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles and replace liners.

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish paper products and soap.

  • Clean interior windows, doors, entryways, and glass surfaces throughout the museum and offices.

Museum Exhibits & Display Care

  • Carefully clean exhibit displays, display cases, and museum glass using specialized museum-approved cleaning tools and products.

  • Dust exhibit cases, display furniture, and other museum fixtures without disturbing specimens or artifacts.

  • Follow established procedures for cleaning around valuable mineral, gem, and meteorite collections.

  • Immediately report any damage, maintenance concerns, or exhibit issues.

Deep Cleaning (Tuesday – Museum Closed)

  • Perform a comprehensive deep cleaning of the museum and office areas each Tuesday while the museum is closed to the public.

  • Thoroughly clean floors, baseboards, windows, fixtures, furniture, restrooms, and high-touch surfaces.

  • Dust high surfaces, vents, shelving, and museum displays as directed.

  • Complete seasonal and periodic deep-cleaning projects.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Perform light maintenance of the property, as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • 1–3 years of custodial, janitorial, or commercial cleaning experience preferred.

  • Must pass a background check.

  • Experience cleaning museums, galleries, schools, offices, or other public facilities is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively with minimal supervision.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness.

  • Reliable, punctual, and dependable with a strong work ethic.

  • Ability to handle cleaning tasks around delicate museum exhibits and valuable collections with care.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and comply with museum safety procedures.

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and perform frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing as required.

  • Must have reliable transportation.

Tuesday – Saturday, 6a-2p

Pay

$22 - $23/hr DOE
