Institution description
Founded in 1964, Greater Portland Landmarks uses Portland’s heritage – its buildings, places, culture, and stories - as a catalyst for connection, affordability, and resilience. We engage the community to learn from its history, preserve special places, and encourage development that serves and inspires those who live, work, and visit Portland today and in the future.
Greater Portland Landmarks manages the Portland Observatory tower, located off Congress Street in the historic Munjoy Hill neighborhood of Portland. Built in 1807, the structure is the only remaining historic maritime signal station in the United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and became both a National Historic Landmark and National Civil Engineering Landmark in 2006. A visit to the Portland Observatory offers breathtaking views of Portland Harbor and guided history tour.
